Research: Focus Group

Research into Potential Target Audience

To ensure your creative ideas are on the right track you will take part in a focus group. In this focus group you will pitch your initial ideas to your classmates and gain feedback on them.

To prepare yourself for this focus group you should think about:

  • What kind of music will your magazine focus on?
  • What will your magazine be called?
  • Will you feature a single artist or a band on your Front Cover?
  • What kind of article will be on your double page spread?
  • What colour scheme will your magazine have?
  • How much will it cost?

The answers to these questions should be written up in a word document or a PowerPoint so they can be uploaded to your blog.

You will then talk about each of these questions with your assigned focus group, gaining feedback from them for each point.

When you are conducting your focus group you should ensure everybody in the group gives an opinion. You should also ask open questions (rather than leading questions with Yes/No answers) to ensure you are getting their honest opinions rather than the ones you want to hear.

When giving your feedback in your focus groups ensure it is useful, and not simply "Yeah thats a good idea". If you think its good tell them why. If you think it could do with some improvement tell them how you would change it. Detailed answers are much more useful to you when it comes to write your evaluation.

The focus group should concentrate on your ideas for your magazine content. The feedback you gain from this focus group will let you know if you are headed in the right direction, and if your ideas will appeal to your audience.
